Happy 40th - the National Way
At the Halifax Amateur Radio Club Hamfest, held on my birthday of May 15, guess what I found? For a photo-documentary of the restoration process click here --> HRO Sr. Restoration.
We arrived late at the hamfest, nearly
11AM.
(Lesson learned - multiply "guy" time by a factor of 10 to arrive at typical female "ready to leave" time), so I did not expect much to be left.
Standard operating procedure, a quick
circle of the room with an eye out for the gleam of black crackle.
What did I spy, could that really be a
National PW dial?
A closer inspection, yes it was.
That's right, a wonderful old 1930s vintage National HRO Sr.
receiver, power supply, 7 band coils with the wooden storage box and original manual!
In nice shape too, with a few simple easy to reverse modifications.
It was being sold by VE1MR for the estate
of a silent key and it went begging until I took a look at it....then the
vultures began to circle.
Christine was busy fending them off while
off while I removed the bottom off the receiver to examine it. Past experience told me that they had
low-balled the seller, you know the routine..."old radio, nobody really uses
those any more, where can you get parts, etc." and were now worried.
I had to think a moment, do I really need
yet another radio....even an HRO......the answer was YES! The price was a bargain and the memory of
coming to Halifax and finding a glorious boatanchor on my 40th...priceless.
A little consternation and confusion with
US Customs..."What is that old electronic thing in the trunk?" "Why that is a 1930s National HRO ham radio
receiver Officer, see my Customs declaration." and I was home free.
